Earn Globally. Comply Confidently.
Empowering Global Professionals
In an interconnected world, income no longer has borders but SARS still does. South Africans now earn salaries from Dubai, dividends from London, and consulting fees from Singapore all while managing compliance at home.
The question is no longer “Do I pay tax?” it’s “Where, how much, and under which rule?”
At Ronmat Advisory, we specialise in foreign income taxation for South Africans whether you’re working abroad, living offshore, or simply receiving global income streams. We interpret the law, calculate the impact, and defend your position when it matters most.
The Foreign Income Landscape
South Africa’s tax system is residency-based meaning if you are a South African tax resident, SARS taxes your worldwide income.
That includes:
- Foreign employment income (subject to the Section 10(1)(o)(ii) exemption),
- Offshore business profits,
- Foreign dividends and interest,
- Rental income from property abroad, and
- Capital gains from overseas asset disposals.
Each category is governed by its own set of provisions, exchange-control implications, and reporting obligations including Section 6quat foreign tax credits and DTA relief.
If you’re non-resident, SARS only taxes South African-sourced income but you must have formally ceased residency (under Section 9H) to enjoy that distinction.
What We Do
Our foreign income advisory ensures compliance across multiple jurisdictions while optimising your effective tax position.
- Income Source Classification: Determine whether income is South African or foreign-sourced under Section 9of the Income Tax Act.
- Exemption Application: Validate eligibility for the R1.25 million foreign employment exemption and structure remuneration accordingly.
- Double Taxation Relief: Apply DTA articles 15 to 23 to prevent dual taxation of employment, investment, and business income.
- Foreign Tax Credits: Prepare and support Section 6quat claims with correct documentation and country-by-country reconciliation.
- Offshore Disclosure: Assist with Voluntary Disclosure Programme (VDP) filings for historic non-compliance or unreported income.
- Currency Conversion & Reporting: Apply official SARS exchange rates, IFRS translation principles, and CRS consistency for transparency.
Our goal is simple: your foreign income should work for you not against you.
Our Approach
We combine technical analysis with a practical understanding of how global income actually flows. Whether you’re an airline pilot, digital consultant, or investor, we start by mapping your income sources, tax residency, and treaty connections.
From there, we:
- Identify which rules apply (Income Tax Act, DTA, or both).
- Quantify the exposure.
- Structure documentation to support your position.
Our clients appreciate that we don’t overwhelm them with jargon. We explain complex rules, Section 10(1)(o)(ii), 6quat, 9H, and DTA provisions in clear, actionable language.
It’s how we turn uncertainty into confidence — and complexity into Clarity. Strategy. Growth.
